XY Pad

The XY Pad is a two-axis surface: horizontal movement controls one value (X) and vertical movement controls another (Y), at the same time. It works in MIDI or OSC mode.

What it's for

Expressive gestures that move two parameters at once:

  • Filter cutoff and resonance.
  • Position in a spatial effect.
  • Morphing between sounds.
  • Coordinates for visual software.

Adding an XY Pad

  1. Open the Editor.
  2. In the palette, choose XY Pad in the MIDI or OSC section. In MIDI it automatically gets two consecutive free CCs, one for each axis.
  3. Double-tap the control to open the inspector.
  4. Set it up and tap Save.

Using it in Perform

Drag your finger across the surface. The horizontal position sends the X value and the vertical position sends the Y value.

The XY Pad can also be moved by other controls: it can be a target of macros (each axis separately), of a State, which stores X and Y, and of an LFO, per axis.

Combined or separate OSC routes

  • Combined: a single message carries X and Y together, on Path X.
  • Separate: one message per axis, each on its own path.

The message format is explained in MIDI and OSC connections.

Limits

  • It has no Macro mode.
  • The OSC minimum and maximum are shared by both axes.
