Perform

Perform is the screen where you play. When you open a scene you go straight here, to the last page you used. Every control responds to touch and sends MIDI or OSC, and the engines (Arpeggiator, Drum Player, Drone Pad and LFO) run locked to the global tempo.

The idea is that on stage you don't need setup screens: you switch pages, move faders, trigger pads, launch engines and recall states from here.

The Tempo Inspector

From the tempo pill you change the BPM, set the tempo with Tap, choose an internal or external clock, and stop every Arpeggiator, Drone Pad, Drum Player and LFO with Stop All. All its options are in Tempo and clock.

Switch pages

The pills under the top bar show the scene's pages. Tap a pill to switch to that page. If there are more pills than fit, drag the row with your finger to see the rest.

There's no swipe gesture on the page to change it: you use the pills.

Linked controls

If two MIDI faders, knobs, XY Pads or toggles on the same page use the same channel and the same CC, moving one updates the other automatically. This lets you have the same parameter at two sizes or in two places on the page.

Choose targets live

Some modules let you choose their targets right in Perform by tapping controls on screen. Targets can be on other pages.

State and LFO

  1. Touch and hold a State set to Custom selection, or an LFO's CONNECT button. Selection mode turns on and the pill for the page that holds the module blinks.
  2. Tap the controls you want as targets. You can switch pages to pick controls on other pages.
  3. To confirm, tap the State or the CONNECT button again.

See State and LFO.

Macro Fader, Macro Knob and Macro Toggle

Touch and hold the Macro control's button to start a three-step walkthrough. The color of its page pill tells you which step you're on:

  1. Red, choose targets: tap the controls you want to move (they can be on other pages), then tap the macro's button.
  2. Blue, From value (Off on the Toggle): the macro goes to its minimum. Set the targets to the value they should have at that end and tap the button.
  3. Green, To value (On on the Toggle): the macro goes to its maximum. Set the targets to their other end and tap the button. The targets and their ranges are saved.

These are the same targets you can set up in the inspector (see MIDI · MACRO · OSC modes and Toggle). If you don't choose any target, the walkthrough is canceled.

Your selections are kept even if you switch pages during the walkthrough.

Engine editors

The Arpeggiator, the Drum Player and the Drone Pad open their editor from the module itself, without leaving Perform: steps, patterns and presets. See Arpeggiator, Drum Player and Drone Pad.

Note safety

So that no notes are left hanging on stage:

  • If the app goes to the background or there's an audio interruption (for example, a phone call), RigAstra stops every engine and turns off all notes: it sends Note Off for the active notes, plus CC 123 (All Notes Off) and CC 120 (All Sound Off) on every channel. When you return to the app, you need to start the engines again.
  • Changing an Arpeggiator's channel from its header also turns off the notes that were sounding.

Limitations

  • RigAstra doesn't keep running in the background. If another app is in the foreground, the clock stops, so RigAstra can't act as the master clock in that situation.
  • There's no swipe gesture to change pages.
  • Perform has no inspector of its own: tempo, pages and controls are set up in their own inspectors.
