Quick how-tos
The most common questions, in a few steps.
Try it without your own files
Open File > Sample Sessions and pick Bach or Clementi. Both come with hands already split and training plans ready.
Connect your piano
In Settings > Audio / MIDI, turn on your device. If it isn’t listed, click Refresh Sources. Then pick a sound in Instrument.
Import a MIDI file
Cmd+I or File > Import MIDI…. If the file has more than two voices, Medussa asks which one is each hand.
Loop a few bars
Set the A and B points and turn the loop on with Cmd+L. To practice slowly, lower the playback speed.
Record what you play
In Visualizer or Editor, with the transport stopped, press REC and then Space. Cmd+R starts recording right away.
Change the whole look at once
Settings > Scene > Appearance Profiles: twelve built-in profiles that change colors, layers, background and floor together.
Zoom the waterfall
Cmd + scroll over the visualizer, or Cmd++ / Cmd+−. Cmd+0 returns to the natural size.
Export a video
Cmd+Shift+E. Pick the aspect ratio, resolution (up to 4K) and 30, 60 or 120 fps. Check Include Audio if you want sound.
Vertical video for social media
Choose 9:16 when exporting and use the Camera Frame to lock the framing or let it follow the notes automatically.

Frequently asked questions
What do I need to use Medussa?
A Mac running macOS 13 Ventura or later. You don’t need a piano: you can import MIDI files or open the sample sessions. To play live, any piano or controller that sends MIDI and is recognized by macOS will work.

Make sure the Instrument source isn’t set to Silent and try the System Piano. Then check the Master and Instrument levels in the Mixer and the output selected in Settings > Audio / MIDI. If the audio track has S (solo) on, everything else is muted.

Check the connection, open Settings > Audio / MIDI, click Refresh Sources and turn on the right input. In Instrument, try the Omni channel to accept every channel.
Read more →The sound is late, or it crackles
That’s the buffer size, in Settings > Audio / MIDI. If there’s delay, try a smaller one; if there are dropouts or clicks, try a larger one.

Medussa loads Audio Unit instruments. The Mac App Store edition runs under macOS sandbox restrictions, so not every installed plug-in can load. You always have the built-in piano and the Medussa Instrument, which you can customize.

That’s expected: Space stops and returns to where you started playing. To continue from where you are, use the Pause button.
Read more →Both hands show in the same color
Check Settings > Scene > Main > Tell the hands apart. If the piece doesn’t have its hands split, select the notes in the editor and mark them with L and R. What you play live always uses the right-hand colors.
Read more →Parts are missing after importing a MIDI file
If the file had more than two voices, only the two you picked as hands were imported. Import it again and review each voice, or click Cancel in that dialog to import everything as right hand.

Open File > Recover Automatic Copy… and pick a copy by date. In Settings > Global you can set how often copies are made and how many are kept.

In the export panel, turn on Include Audio and the instrument or track you need, and turn Metronome off.
Read more →The transparent video looks black
Many players show black even when the alpha channel is there. Import the video into an editor that supports it and place it over another image. The scene glow comes out as a second “… - Glow.mp4” file to blend with Screen or Add.

Copy the .mdss file together with its Media folder. For backgrounds and audio to travel with the session, choose in Settings > Global to copy them into that folder before adding them. Plug-ins must also be installed on the other Mac.
What data does Medussa collect?
Your sessions, recordings and practice history stay on your Mac. The details are in the privacy policy.
How do I get a refund?
Mac App Store purchases are handled by Apple. Request it at reportaproblem.apple.com. If you’d like to tell me what didn’t work, it really helps.
