Memory (Cats)

Star Wars-Style Orchestration for Whitney Avalon – John Williams Meets Andrew Lloyd Webber

Jun 12, 2020

"Memory" is the most famous song from Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Cats (1981), with lyrics by Trevor Nunn based on T.S. Eliot's poetry. Made iconic by Elaine Paige's original West End performance and later by Barbra Streisand's recording, it's one of the most covered songs in musical theatre history — a sweeping ballad about loss, solitude, and the hope of a new beginning.

For this project, Whitney Avalon asked me to orchestrate "Memory" in the style of John Williams' Star Wars scores. The challenge was extraordinary: merging two of the most beloved musical worlds — the emotional intimacy of Lloyd Webber with the epic grandeur of Williams. I wove subtle melodic hints from The Force Theme, Leia's Theme, Rey's Theme, and Anakin's Theme into the orchestral arrangement, placing them at key lyrical moments Whitney identified in her custom-written text.

The orchestration features French horns, full string sections (violins, violas, cellos, basses), woodwinds, and percussion — all performed using EastWest orchestral libraries. As a lifelong Star Wars fan and admirer of John Williams, this project was a true Jedi adventure.
